Tummy Tuck
Tummy Tuck, or Abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to tighten the stomach muscles as well as the tummy skin. It is especially helpful after the abdomen has been stretched out by pregnancy or significant weight loss.
No-Drain since 2008
Dr. Nachbar has been using a No Drain method for all of his Tummy Tucks since May 2008. Although using the No Drain technique is more difficult and takes longer than the standard technique, patients have significantly less discomfort, as well as a quicker recovery, when the No Drain method is used. Patients who have had Tummy Tuck often tell us that the drain (a tube left protruding from your skin to allow excess fluid to be removed) was the worst part of the procedure.
Also, the most common problem after Tummy Tuck is a “Seroma,” a collection of fluid, which the drain attempts to prevent. The No Drain method virtually eliminates that problem.
Less Pain / Quicker Recovery
Because the No-Drain Tummy Tuck does not use a drain, there is less pain because we eliminate all of the pain associated with having the drain sewn in place and rubbing the tissue for two to three weeks, as well as eliminating all of the pain associated with removing the drain.
Also, Dr. Nachbar uses Exparel® long-lasting anesthetic with the No Drain Tummy Tuck. The Exparel® is an anesthetic in a microscopic delivery form that lasts for three to four days, also reducing the amount of pain you have after surgery
Combining the No-Drain technique and Exparel® long-lasting anesthetic allows quicker recovery, because there is less pain to limit your ability to move after surgery. Resuming activity as quickly as possible after surgery has been shown to be one of the best ways to reduce the risk of complications such as blood clots that can occur of you are immobile too long.
More About Tummy Tuck
Tummy Tuck is a procedure to tighten the muscle and skin of the tummy area. Also called Abdominoplasty, Dr. Nachbar performs Tummy Tucks in a surgery center with a real physician anesthesiologist, because that is the safest and best way to do the procedure. Dr. Nachbar also keeps his Tummy Tuck patients overnight at the surgery center following surgery.
Incision Height
Some patients prefer placement of the incision at different levels
The procedure starts by marking where the Tummy Tuck will be performed, because some patients prefer the scars higher or lower, depending on their swimwear.
Surgical Steps
Once you are comfortably asleep, the skin and fat layers are lifted from the muscle layer. The muscle is tightened with stitches, and the extra skin and fat is removed.
It is at this stage where the No Drain Tummy Tuck procedure differs. A series of “Progressive Tension Sutures” are placed, to help support the tissue and take tension off of the final closure, as well as eliminating the space where fluid could otherwise accumulate. This takes as many as 40 or 50 (or more) sutures, and must be done very carefully.
The incisions are then closed up and the patient sent to the Recovery Room.
Circumferential Tummy Tuck
It is also possible to do a “Circumferential Tummy Tuck,” which goes all the way around, to help tighten the tissue to the side and back, as well as allowing more complete improvement at the sides of the tummy in front.
The Circumferential Tummy Tuck is also done without a drain.
